The kick-off meeting of the JP-COOPS- “Judicial and Police Cooperation Preventing Radicalization Towards Terrorism” Project was held in Malta on the 15th and 16th of January 2019 and was hosted by the Coordinator of the JP-COOPS project, namely the Department of Information Policy and Governance from the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences at the University of Malta. During the meeting, the partners established the implementation plan and outlined all matters concerning task responsibilities and first steps, discussed aspects concerning budget distribution, cost eligibility and justificative documents, set an outline of the main strategic documents (Communication Plan, Dissemination Plan, Risk Log, Quality Plan and Impact Evaluation).

The first interim Consortium meeting of the JP-COOPS Project was held in Bremen, Germany on the 10th and 11th of September 2019 and was kindly hosted by the Hochschule für Öffentliche Verwaltung (HfÖV). Representatives of all but two project partners, including the Ceske Vysoke Uceni Technicke V Praze – CVUT (Czech Republic), Vrije Universiteit Brussel – VUB (Belgium), Center for The Study of Democracy – CSD (Bulgaria) Universidad Rey Juan Carlos – URJC (Spain), Center for Security Studies - KEMEA (Greece), Agenfor International (Italy), were present.

During the meeting, the partners discussed and approved key aspects of the project future development including its stages and the overall implementation plan and outlined the dissemination and evaluation strategies and criteria.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 2020 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

As part of the JP-COOPS partners, organized 9 Living Labs aimed at assisting practitioners to better understand the pathways towards radicalization, the impact of GDPR on information exchange regarding inmates, the use of electronic devices and drones in correctional settings and the implementation of mediation and rehabilitation.

The living labs included different practitioners ranging from correctional officers to lawyers, judges and academics, who were encouraged to share their challenges and exchange best practices. The collection of best practices will be published in the JP-COOPS Handbook, made available in an electronic format on the project website.

The workshop took place on Friday 6th of March 2020 at the UN OHCHR Headquarters in Geneva and was organized by the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the right to Privacy (SRP), in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Justice, AGENFOR International, Central European Initiative, the PRE-RIGHTS and JP-COOPS projects and the Department of Information Policy & Governance at the University of Malta.

The discussion focused on the extent to which the right to privacy should be enjoyed by prisoners.

This workshop, which was conducted in English, successfully brought together a total of 20 prison and correctional practitioners from across Europe with privacy and policy experts. The most important outcome was to identify common challenges, share best practices and develop ways forward that promote both security and fundamental human rights like privacy.
